Summer is on but don't turn on your sprinklers yet

  • School is out, the sun is blazing and the fields are calling. All beautiful things in their different ways, but the fact is school is going to start again...very soon. I am here to brighten it too and tell you learning can be fun and returning to school can be the best thing after a hot fudge, with Michel Cluizel chocolate for your kids or you.

  • There are on average three months during the summer for children to be away from a structured learning environment. This time is crucial and most miss the window in getting on track and staying in the game. There are things you can do to keep your children on track, without getting them bored of learning.

  • 1) Find fun ways to make learning ...fun. Most children just do not want to know they are learning, and parents miss the opportunities to find creative ways to teach. Scavenger hunts are priceless for the really young ones, especially if you have more than one. You give them a list of things to find emphasing the letters they begin with. It could be at a restaurant or any safe place in town where you can keep a watchful eye on them. In a long or short drive in the car, you can ask trivia questions based on what they learnt during the previous school year. And give points based on what they answer. These points can tally up and they can be rewarded for reaching a goal. A buzzer can be added in the mix too.

  • 2) Create a learning environment at home, the library is an excellent resource for getting free books, and fiction should not be excluded. A fixed time for T.V. is also good

  • 3) Last but not least, get some outside help from a teacher or a good learning resource center like Success Prep (www.Gogetprep.com). People available to help make your valuable jobs as parents easier.

  • These make the difference you want to see in your child during the school year.
